With a 400,000-man army, the 21-member junta comprised of the ruling families and selected investors holds all of the marbles here, at least in the majority of the country. These guys are mostly seen in public and the media petting goats, kissing babies, inspecting chickens, being deified by famous monks and passing out numbers to queues of foreign businessmen.

These folks have zero tolerance for dissent-in any form over any issue. Aung San Suu Kyi remains in isolation, most of her key supporters are in jail after dissident round-ups in May 1996 and May 1997. And the KNU has been all but crushed.
