Ethnic groups and freedom fighters aside, even Buddhist monks aren't immune from a little storm trooping to keep them in line. After an alleged incident in March 1997 involving the rape of a young Buddhist girl by a Muslim businessman, monks in Mandalay decided to have a little tea party at the area's Muslim mosques. SLORC troops killed one of the rampaging monks and then slam-dunked Mandalay with a dusk-to-dawn curfew. The violence spread south to Yangon before it was quickly squashed.
