With the capture of Abrego and other gold-chained fat dudes of the Gulf cartel, the Junrez cartel emerged as Mexico's strongest dope alliance. Cartel kingpin Amado Carrillo Fuentes, who died after a botched face lift in July 1997, was the most powerful drug lord in Mexico and was chummy with the Cali cartel. He was accused of facilitating huge jet loads of dope into Mexico from Colombia, thus his moniker. From Ciudad Junrez, the coke moves to American cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston and New York. Until his death, Carillo managed to elude one of the most extensive dragnets by drug agents on both sides of the border. After his death, more than 50 people died in a gang war on the streets of Ciudad Juerez.
