In February 1999, the father of Mexican National Soccer Team goalie Jorge Campos was abducted because, well, his son was goalie on the Mexican National Soccer Team. He was released a week later after a US$150,000 payoff. Though the perps in this case were caught, there doesn't seem much deterrent in Mexico for bad guys to go after high-profile figures. Only 6 in every 100 crimes reported to the police are solved. Only half of those found guilty spend any time behind bars. The message is clear: the Mexican National Soccer Team had better have a better outing at the next World Cup in Seoul than they fared in France.
