Mexico is the easiest place in the world to own a car with a Kelly Blue Book value of exactly US$0. In the first two months of 1999, 6,128 insured vehicles were stolen in Mexico. The final tally for 1999 is expected to exceed 43,000. The chances of getting your car back? About 1 in 6. And these are just the insured vehicles. Fully 66 percent of all vehicles in Mexico are uninsured-and their thefts not officially tallied. But even scarier than the number of rip-offs is the violence that usually comes along with them. Violence is involved in about 55 percent of all car thefts. The day of the week your car is most likely to get popped? Friday. A good day to keep the garage door locked-and get your pizza delivered. If the delivery boy doesn't get his car stolen on the way.
