Tourists don't even think about hailing Volkswagen Bug taxis on the street anymore. The incidents of violent crimes against foreigners in these vehicles is escalating. In 1997 alone there were 653 registered reports of crimes against foreign tourists, 160 of them assaults by taxi drivers.Tourists are not only robbed, but beaten silly. Drivers often work as cohorts of other thieves, who stop the cars at knife- or gunpoint. Use taxis only from authorized taxi stands (CTO or sitio stands). In Mexico City, beat feet from the taxis parked outside the Bellas Artes Theater, as well as those parked in front of discos, nightclubs and other venues tourists frequent.
