If you wanna get jacked around, Mexico City-with its population of 17 million-is a good place to start. An average of 443 criminal suspects are nabbed each day in Mexico City. More than 700 crimes are reported each day in the capital. Twenty-three percent of Mexico city residents said they have been victims of crime, usually robbery. About 75 percent of the victims said they did not bother to report the crime.
Mexico City police admit an average of 182 violent crimes each day. Murder has become one of the 10 leading causes of death in Mexico. More than 15,000 people are murdered each year. Forty percent of the victims are between the ages of 15 and 29. There are 12.62 murders committed per 100,000 people in Mexico City. Fifty percent of the killers get away with it. According to one late-1998 study, Mexico City is the tenth most deady metropolis in North America and Europe. Little wonder-there are a million muggings and 70,000 car thefts in the capital each year. Crime against foreigners has risen dramatically since 1995. Most of the activity has been street crime. Pickpocketing, armed robbery and purse snatching are common. Using ATMs is a kiss of death. Thugs and other nasties hang in the shadows. Use only highly visible ATMs inside commercial establishments and only in daylight. Thieves have been known to beat up victims for their PIN codes and then abduct them overnight so as to use the machine the next day. The good news? Now ritzy hotels are offering crime insurance to guests. A fee of between $2 and $2.50 added to the hotel bill covers loss of goods and money.
