Beware of Highway 15 in the state of Sinaloa and of Highway 40 between the city of Durango and the Pacific coast areas. These are particularly dangerous and are where a number of criminal assaults have occurred. Avoid express Highway 1 (limited access) in Sinaloa altogether-even in daytime-because it is remote and subject to bandits.
Never sleep in vehicles along the road. If your vehicle breaks down, stay with it and wait for the police or the "Green Angels." Do not, under any circumstances, pick up hitchhikers; not only do they pose a threat to your physical safety, but they also put you in danger of being arrested for unwittingly transporting narcotics or narcotics traffickers in your vehicle. There are checkpoints and temporary roadblocks where vehicles are examined.
