The six-nation peacekeeping force sent in by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was tasked with keeping Liberia cool and calm but spent most of its time hiding in camps during the '96 flare-up. Then-leader General John Mark Inienger bravely returned to tour the looted capital and pledged "to do everything possible to protect the city" and, we are sure, his hide. Their most shining moment was back in 1990 when Sam Doe went to negotiate at ECOWAS headquarters; Prince Johnson's troops broke in, shot him and cut his ears off while the peacekeeping troops sat and watched.
