The AFL was formerly the national army under the Doe regime, and largely comprised of ethnic Krahns-Doe was a Krahn. By 1992, as a result of the civil war, the AFL maintained only limited authority and most of its equipment had been destroyed or rendered useless. The army these days is essentially just another faction.
During the April and May 1996 clashes in the capital, Krahn fighters loyal to Johnson were based in an AFL barracks downtown. Although its high command said the AFL was not involved in the conflict, many of its soldiers were thought to be fighting alongside fellow Krahns loyal to Johnson and Boley against the forces of Charles Taylor and Alhaji Kromah. Two men claim to be the AFL's chief of staff. Abraham Kromah was "appointed" to the position by the virulently anti-Krahn NPFL while Brigadier General Phillip Karmah inherited it when his predecessor was killed early on in the spring clashes in the capital.
