In May 1997, 30,000 Turkish troops stormed across the border to whack PKK bases in the mountains. As the press was definitely not invited to attend the event, it's all been a bit tricky finding out the scoop. A few months later, though, the Turkish military waxed lyrical about how the PKK had all been eliminated. Odd then that, over two years later, they're still there fighting the PKK, as they have charged over the border again at press time. Since then DP has been one of the few, if not only, publications to get into northern Iraq and, er, thrown out again.
