Israel - The Scoop

Israel was carved out of Palestine by the British after World War II to provide a home for the Jews. The Arabs who had inhabited the region for hundreds of years were not happy. Not at all. Like most colonial border carvings, both sides are still arguing about it. What complicates the situation is that Jerusalem is a holy site for Christians, Jews and Muslims. It's a stew pot, filled with just the right spices and garnishes for one helluva long war.

The Israelis' landgrabs in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon have not made them very popular with their neighbors. Peace agreements with their once bellicose neighbors have cooled things down, but HAMAS, Hezbollah and their hometown supporters of Iran, Syria and Lebanon aren't just going to forgive and forget.

Now that Syria is looking to talk instead of bankrolling terrorists, things may calm down.
