American packaged to the max, Netanyahu is the consummate baby-kissing politician--apple pie style with a kosher twist. Maybe a little too kosher. His Likud Party leans so far to the right, soon the Mediterranean will be lapping at the West Bank. His supporters include ultra-orthodox Jews who would blow away Yasir Arafat at the drop of his towel. Netanyahu may represent the biggest threat to Middle East peace since Saddam's Scuds rained down upon Jerusalem. The problem is he's just such a likeable guy--and he speaks English with a McDonald's accent. Consequently, everything he says seems as if it were written by White House staffers, or scriptwriters in Hollywood penning a pilot for the night soap, "Golan Heights." Netanyahu was nearly indicted for corruption and barely escaped a no-confidence vote in parliament in June 1997.
