One and a half million Israelis use the bus every day, almost 25 percent of the population. There have been nine suicide attacks on buses since April 1994, resulting in 67 people killed. Injuries run at two to three times the death rate. One American tourist was among the dead. Violent incidents have also involved bus stops. The U.S. embassy is advising its employees and American citizens in Israel to avoid use of public transportation, especially buses and bus stops. This restriction does not apply to tour buses. Although Israelis must take the bus, only thrill seekers and cheapskates need expose themselves to what is Israel's most dangerous form of transportation.
