There were about 40,000 rebels in southern Iraq under an umbrella called the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq. Most have regrouped in the north. Many were killed in 1991 by Saddam Hussein during the aborted uprising. They have joined with the Iraqi National Congress (INS) and are based in Sulaymania (Kurdistan).
