Saddam hates Shiite Iran and wasted hundreds of thousands of Iraqis in a bizarre WWI-style retro war of trenches and artillery duels. He kicked things off on September 22, 1980, when 400,000 Iraqis troops invaded Iran across an 800-mile front. Eight years later, the war ended with no winner. For their part the Iranians detest Saddam. No big surprise there, I suppose.
