This group of 120,000 well trained, politically indoctrinated soldiers were originally a bearded rabble of zealots run by ad hoc neighborhood groups, or Komitehs. They earned their reputation for fearlessness in the Iran-Iraq war. And it is a reputation well justified. These, after all, were the kids who would deliberately walk into minefields only concerned that their corpses would be in one piece for the funeral. The man in charge is Yahya Rahim Safavi, who was appointed by hard-liner Ayatollah Ali Khameini. So if you ever wonder who is large and in charge, it is not the nice moderate president.
