Founded in 1980, this is an armed group based in Iraq. Its ideology is a combination of Islam and Marxist babbling. The group is headed by Masud Rajavi. The Iranian government insists that the mujahedin is supported by England and France. The government may be looking for an excuse to conduct a full-scale attack on mujahedin forces in Iraq, where the time seems appropriate for Saddam Hussein to look the other way. Iran's top judge accused the Mujahedin-e-Khalq of conducting a campaign of bombings and assassinations aimed at igniting sectarian tensions. Although government repression has significantly curtailed the effectiveness of the Mujahedin-e-Khalq, the guerrillas still conduct operations inside Iran and remain vocal in the opposition to the government of Iran. The organization was 50,000 strong after the Islamic revolution, with nearly half a million supporters. About 5000 activists have been executed in the government's crackdown, and more than 25,000 imprisoned. After the cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq war, the mujahedin invaded Iran but were crushed by the Iranian armed forces.
