You may remember him as the patient towel-headed guy who politely endured Mike Wallace's dumb questions on 60 Minutes as he tried to show that Iran wants to be buddies; but Mike wanted to spank him for something that happened 20 years ago.
What Mike didn't know was that Rafsanjani was the good guy. During his term, he attended the economy and repaired the damage left by the war with Iraq. He worked to get Iran reacquainted with the international community by expanding world ties and by arranging the release of hostages held by terrorist groups with ties to Iran. Rafsanjani had tougher problems than being grilled by Mike. He has narrowly escaped seven assassination attempts. Rafsanjani is credited with persuading Khomeini to finally agree to a cease-fire in the war with Iraq in August1988.
