Ali Akbar Nateq-Nuri may have lost to Khatami, but he's not going to go away. Many in Iran believe Ali Akbar Nateq-Nuri lost the May 1997 polls solely because it was thought he, as president, would have decreed that women in public wear the long, hooded traditional chador, a one-piece garment about as popular in Iran as Satanic Verses. The real fabric of Iran may have been evidenced by the high turnout at the polls. Nateq-Nuri still leads the ultraconservative parliament and remains Khatami's nemesis.
