Iran - Getting Sick

A yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers over the age of one year coming from infected areas. Arthropod-borne diseases and Hepatitis B are endemic. Malaria is a risk in some provinces from March through November. Food- and water-borne diseases, including cholera, are common, as is trachoma. (Snakes and rabid animals can also pose a threat.) Basic medical care and medicines are available in the principal cities of Iran, but may not be available in outlying areas. There are 3 doctors and 14 hospital beds for every 10,000 people. The international travelers' hot line at the Centers for Disease Control: (404) 332-4559, has additional useful health information.
