If you think Iran means lots of dope and stoned evenings then put this book down now. Iran has executed nearly 2,000 drug smugglers since 1989. Possession of 5 grams of heroin or 3 kilograms of opium will be quite sufficient for you to be strung up.
Iran is on the front line of the war against drugs. And it really is a war. In 1998, 140 tons of drugs were seized by Iranian security forces. Between 1996 and 1998, 2,500 policemen and soldiers were killed by drug smugglers. Iran's border with Afghanistan means that there is a continual flow of very heavily armed Afghans moving backwards and forwards across the border with large amounts of heroin. And they don't like being asked for their passports. Over ten days alone in July 1999 25 smugglers were killed and one ton of drugs seized. The main drug route comes through the province of Khorasan, bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan.
