01/20/81U.S. embassy hostages released. Fifty-two American hostages are freed after 444 days in captivity, following an agreement between the U.S. and Iran arranged by Algeria.

02/01/79Khomeini returns from exile and calls the start of the "Ten Days of Dawn," commemorating the 10 days of unrest, ending with Khomeini taking power on February 11 (the "Day of Victory").
02/04/79Iranian revolution begins. Iran's Shiite clerics start their takeover of the government.

06/28/81The prime minister and 74 others are killed in the bombing of the legislature.
07/03/88The U.S.S. Vincennes mistakenly shoots down an Iranian Airbus airliner over the Persian Gulf.
07/03/89The Ayatollah Khomeini dies.

09/09/78The shah's troops open fire on protesters in Tehran, killing several hundred demonstrators.
09/19/80Iran-Iraq war begins.
11/04/64The Ayatollah Khomeini is exiled to Turkey.
11/04/78Student uprising against the shah.
11/04/79The U.S. embassy is seized and 63 people are taken hostage.
12/04/84Four Islamic Jihad terrorists hijack a Kuwaiti airliner bound for Pakistan from Kuwait and order it flown to Tehran. Two U.S. aid personnel are killed during the hijacking, while two others, another U.S. aid official and an American businessman, are tortured during the ordeal. Iranian troops storm the aircraft on December 9, retaking it from the hijackers.
