Ranvir Sena is a death squad bankrolled by landowners. There has been a two-decade war between land owners and communist groups who seek land reform. Ranvir Sena, a militia group formed by upper-caste landlords, often clashes with the Peoples War Group (PWG), the military arm of the Communist Party of India, over issues relating to the redistribution of land to the poor. Ranvir Sena has not been known to target foreigners and only kills peasants in remote villages. Their main targets are supporters of the Communist Party of India/Marxist-Leninist (CPI/ML), usually shot while they sleep. They also attack members of the Maoist Communist Center (MCC) a faction of the predominately lower-caste Peoples War Group. To date over 25,000 people have been killed since 1990.
