The leader of the local JKLF is Halil Hyder, and its headquarters is in Anantnag, 44 miles from Srinagar. It has been fighting since 1990. Founded in 1977 and led by President Yasin Malik, the JKLF wants to make Muslim Kashmir independent from Hindu India. The ball got rolling in 1988 when one of the leaders, Amanullah Khan, got together with the Srinagar-based Islamic Students League. They typically plant bombs and engage in antigovernment activities.
