The Indian military has about 1.3 million personnel, making it the fourth largest in the world. About half of them are posted in Kashmir. It is the largest force India has ever fielded against a secessionist rebellion. The Indian government subscribes to the domino theory: If Kashmir is allowed to break away from India, other parts of the country with separatist groups would follow and India would exist no longer. To battle its numerous insurgencies, the government will be establishing a counter-insurgency force of 60,000 troops, the largest of its kind in the world. The move comes after India reassessed its security threats, determining (finally) that its most dangerous enemies are not Pakistan and China-but domestic rebels. Currently, internal problems are handled by India's paramilitary forces totaling around 600,000.
