India - Getting In

 

A passport and visa (which must be obtained in advance) are required for entry into India for tourism or business. Visas range from 15 days to six months and can be had in single-entry or multi-entry versions. The only visa extendable is the six-month version. Evidence of yellow fever immunization is needed if the traveler is arriving from an infected area. Convicted drug offenders in India can expect a minimum jail sentence of ten years and heavy fines. Indian customs authorities strictly enforce the laws and regulations governing the declaration, importation or possession of gold and gold objects. Travelers have sometimes been detained for possession of undeclared gold objects. For further entry information, the traveler can contact the following:

Bombay International Airport is a 45- to 60-minute car ride from Bombay and about 23 miles northwest of the city. There is a departure tax of US$10 for international flights, US$3 for Southwest Asian flights.

Between India and Nepal, border crossings are open at Biranj-Raxaul, Kakarbhitta-Siliguri and Sunauli-Gorakhpur. Sunauli is the best entry point if coming from Kathmandu to Delhi or elsewhere in northwestern India. Overland travel between Dhaka and Calcutta is possible. The only border checkpoint open with Pakistan is Lahore-Amritsar. This crossing can also be made by train.
