On July 8, 1996, Muslim guerrilla Ikwhan Jammu kidnapped 19 journalists for 10 hours. It was a year after the kidnapping of German Dirk Hasert. The journalists were on their way to a press conference held by the Muslim mujahedin in Achabal (40 miles from Srinagar), another guerrilla group. Ikwhan held the journalists because their editors refused to stop publication of their newspapers after they refused to publish one of the group's press releases.
