In May 1991, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed in Tamil Nadu by a suicide bomber. Members of the Sri Lankan Tamil terrorist group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), commit acts of terrorism and violence throughout southern India.
