There has been an increase in the number of organized criminal gangs operating in Bombay, and police confirm that the problem exists throughout Maharashtra state. Drug gangs have proliferated in the larger cities, and police report these gangs have moved into some of the most affluent areas of Bombay. In 1994, there were three drive-by shootings in the Malabar Hill area of Bombay. Home burglary still remains the most prevalent crime in Bombay, often committed by servants or other persons with easy access to the residence involved.
