Cops make a maximum of about US$50 a month, if and when they get paid. There's no back pay if the accountants miss a payday. That's where you come in. If you are stopped by the police for whatever reason, you will be expected to become a foreign investor in Congo's economy. You don't have to give them anything, but to wriggle away takes time and bluster. Tourists are rarely beaten or actually charged with crimes (unless they get uppity) so smile, jabber and smile. If you are waylaid by a real criminal, don't bother reporting it. The police and government soldiers have been traditionally responsible for much of the crime in Congo, especially violent crime.
