05/04/97Mobutu-Kabila peace talks break down.
05/16/97Mobutu gives up presidential powers and flees the country. Kabila renames Zaire as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
05/23/63The Organization of African Unity (OAU) was founded on this date. The day is celebrated as Africa Freedom Day. The OAU was organized to promote unity and cooperation among African states.
06/30/60Independence Day. The Belgian Congo becomes the Republic of the Congo.
07/01/96Mobutu leaves for cancer treatment in Switzerland.
09/01/96In eastern Zaire, Tutsis revolt after officials try to banish them. Kabila takes the helm of the rebellion and attacks refugee camps to snuff former Rwandan Hutu soldiers. Kabila begins sweep across eastern Zaire.
09/08/97Death of Mobutu.
10/14/30Birthday of former President Mobutu.
10/26/96Tutsi soldiers slaughter Hutu refugees in Zaire. Hutus use refugee camps as bases for attacks on Tutsis in Burundi.
10/27/71Democratic Republic of the Congo is renamed the Republic of Zaire.
11/24/65Revolution Day commemorates the establishment of the Second Congolese Republic by General Joseph Mobutu (now Mobutu Sese Seko) following his seizure of control of the government on this date.
