The Russian army, since the czarist era and through the Soviet period, has always relied on brute force and sheer numbers to win wars-which they haven't been doing a lot of recently. Tactically deficient , morally corrupt and technologically marginal, the army has always relied on overpowering numbers of undertrained, underfed troops to take home battlefield trophies. Even during the Soviet era, there was little need to train elite commando units, as there weren't any uprisings for them to put down.
By the time the Russian army was booted out of Grozny, its soldiers were lice-ridden and begging for food in the capital. To get through their roadblocks, all it took was a loaf of bread. If you threw in some Camel cigarettes or vodka, they'd roll out a red carpet and give you an armed escort (big deal). Even DP's muj buddies could pay $1400 to cross Russian lines to fight and get a ride in the Commanders car tossed in.
