You know the game where you have to control all the little squares. Well, it's the same basic idea here. Aslan Maskhadov considers access to the Caspian Sea to be "vitally necessary for Ichkeria." They want to create an "imanate." The problem is, there is a place called Dagestan in the way. Basayev's attempts to declare Dagestan independent and toss out the Russians didn't work, and it appears the locals weren't too thrilled about being bombed and shelled. The Chechens also like the idea of the Black Sea being part of Ichkeria. The Chechens are cozy with Abkhazian rebels and it's conceivable that they could kick the Russian peacekeepers out. Now what about Georgia, you say? Well, Georgia hates the Russians more than it hates the Abkhaz rebels or Chechens, so it's conceivable that there could be one fat happy corridor from the Caspian to the Black Sea. The problem is that Russia has designs on getting Georgia back by hook or by crook. More likely by crook. Whoever wins would create a freeway for drugs, oil, smuggled goods and whatever else needs to get from Afghanistan through Turkey and into Europe and Russia.
