You would think Russia would have learned. This war is neither the first or second conflict in Chechnya. Russia first conquered Chechnya and Dagestan between 1825 and 1859 and had to deal with a fighter named Iman Shamyl. He finally surrendered to Tsar Alexander II, but the fighting continued as Russian columns continued to be attacked in the 1860s. The North Caucasus resisted by force the imposition of Soviet rule between 1917 and 1921, with sporadic clashes continuing into the 1930s. He was known for daring raids behind Russian lines, fighting against massive odds and oddly enough for surrendering and living out his life in comfort in Russia.
