Military activity is not predictable and occurs in all regions without notice. Most of the 400 villages are heavily armed and very jumpy. The area is under martial law, if you could call it that.. For those who like political subtlety, the area north of the Terek river is pro-Russian and does not grumble, the lowland middle of Chechnya is under heavy occupation, and all bets are off in the mountainous southwest.
