Duch was the director of Phnom Penh's infamous Tuol Sleng detention center, or S-21, where perhaps 16,000 Cambodians and 8 Westerners were brutally tortured before being carted off to the killing fields at Choeung Ek for execution. Western reporters tracked down Duch in the spring of 1999 in Battamabang, where he'd been working for three years as an NGO worker under an alias. A born-again Christian, Duch confessed his crimes to the media and offered to blow the lid off the chain of command and the secretive flow charts of Pol Pot's genocide machine at an international war crimes trial.
