Former KR big shot Ieng Sary-Brother Number Three, foreign minister in Pol Pot's '75-'79 regime and a butcher in his own right-initiated the mass KR defections in August 1996 and was rewarded by the government with a royal pardon for his genocide crimes and the leadership of the former KR headquarters of Pailin, which Sary rules with virtual autonomy from Phnom Penh. Sary and his boys have swapped shoulder patches, but that's about all. He occasionally trots on over to Bangkok for medical treatment, as he did when DP was in town to interview him. His son, Ing Vouth, took one look at the motley DP crew in late 1998 at Pailin police headquarters and spat pebbles and dust from his shiny new smuggled SUV in a dash to get back into town. Perhaps he was expecting Nate Thayer or Ted Koppel.
