Cambodia - Getting Sick

Outside of the major cities, you are out of luck here. It would be best to fly to Bangkok or Singapore for treatment of serious wounds or diseases. You can expect malaria and other tropical bugs endemic to Southeast Asia. There is one doctor for every 27,000 people in Cambodia.

Update all your shots and take the usual precautions for malaria and other tropical diseases. There are many virulent strains of malaria that are resistant to all prophylactics. Inoculations are not required unless you're arriving from an endemic area.

Dr. Gavin Scott is Phnom Penh's senior Western doctor and the only native English speaker. He can be contacted at the Tropical & Travelers Medical Clinic (No. 88 Street 108, tel., 366802).

There is no truly modern hospital facility in the country. You will need to buy your own drugs (usually expired). It's best to stock up in Bangkok, where many useful preparations can be had over the counter. Dangerous snakes include vipers, cobras and king cobras, hanumans and banded kraits.
