UN officials and demining experts estimate that between 5 and 6 million mines are scattered around the country. The Russian PMN2 antipersonnel mine is most common in Cambodia. Between 150 to 500 people are killed or maimed every month. It is estimated that one person in 256 in Cambodia is an amputee because of an injury from land mines. The government says it needs US$80 million to clear them. The most heavily mined areas are Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Kampong Chang, Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, Oddar Meanchey, Batneay Meanchey, Battambang and Pursat. As of 1999, the Cambodian Mine Action Center had only cleared perhaps 10 percent of the old minefields in Cambodia. The good news is that it is expected that it will take 10 to 20 years to clear them all out instead of the 100 years originally expected. Only about 100 square miles of the 1,160 square miles of mined areas have been cleared.
