While DP was in Cambodia a few years ago, a group of 29 mine disposal workers was attacked by the Khmer Rouge in Siem Reap province. The Mines Advisory Group was accused by the KR of laying mines. The 10 gunmen made off with an English mine clearer-Christopher Howe-and his interpreter. A man who was arrested later said he was paid US$20 to show the KR where the mine clearers would be working that day. A group of three women who went to negotiate the Brit's release were themselves taken hostage, and all five were taken to Anlong Veng, the former KR camp run by Ta Mok. Howe and his interpreter have not been heard from since.
