The Tutsis are originally Nilotic herdsmen from the north. The Tutsi-led military junta purged the military and bureaucracy of Hutus from 1964 to 1972. In 1972, a large-scale revolt by the Hutus killed several thousand Tutsis. The Tutsi machine followed with the mass extermination of selected and unselected Hutus. Any Hutu with an education, a decent job or any degree of wealth was arrested and murdered, most in a horrifying fashion. More than 200,000 Hutus were slaughtered in the ensuing three months. The Tutsi army's makeshift trucks could be seen in the streets packed with the mutilated corpses of Hutu victims.
