Street crime and muggings in Burundi pose a high risk for visitors, as DP knows first- hand. Crime involves muggings, purse snatching, pickpocketing, burglary and auto break-ins. Criminals operate individually or in small groups. There have been reports of muggings of persons jogging or walking alone in all sections of Bujumbura, especially on public roads bordering Lake Tanganyika. You've got to be pretty desperate to jack up a jogger. Most health nuts in the world leave their credit cards at home and carry just enough pocket change for a post-jog latte at Starbucks.
Bujumbura U.S. embassy sources report that dangerous areas for criminal activity in Bujumbura are the downtown section, the vicinity of the Novotel and the Source du Nil hotels, and along the shore of Lake Tanganyika. The majority of the criminal incidents in the Burundian capital consist of muggings, purse snatchings, and auto break-ins (to steal the contents).
