Organized gangs of highway banditos prey the route linking Sao Paulo and Rio and other roads. Police say that highway robbery has "exploded" over the past six years; the gangs have become more sophisticated than drug traffickers. The usual MO is for the thugs to place rocks or other obstacles on the road during the wee hours, forcing drivers to stop. Their biggest caches are loads of cargo and electrical appliances snatched from commercial vehicles.
