Between January and May 1999, more than 44 people were killed by stray rounds of gunfire in Rio de Janeiro. Most of the strays come from gang battles in Rio's streets, mostly in the city's favelas (hillside slums). But some of the flak is spat from the weapons of police officers in the heat of battle with dope pushers. Kevlar thongs may become all the rage on Rio's beaches.
