Rio likes to party, so it's no surprise that the areas surrounding beaches, discos, bars, nightclubs and other similar establishments are dangerous, especially at dusk and during the evening hours. Prime targets in Rio are the popular beaches and neighborhoods of Copacabana and Leme. The most dangerous areas of the city are hillside slums (favelas), where drug gang shootouts and cop atrocities are routine. Gang warfare, drug trafficking and robberies claim about a 18 lives each day in Rio.
"I Gave at the Office"
The most dangerous thing to tell a crook in Brazil. Thugs in Brazil aren't particularly thrilled when, after they've gone to all that trouble to jack you up, they discover you've read all those crime safety brochures and left all your valuables and cash back in the hotel safe. It's best to keep about US$30 in local currency on hand for a potential donation to the local black economy. Muggers often respond violently if you're only carrying a Bic lighter and a New York subway token.
