There are probably more cash transactions each day at Rio de Janeiro's international airport than at a typical Rio bank. So why not jack up the airport? In March 1999, five gunmen tried to rip off bank security guards at the airport in a hail of gunfire in the international terminal, forcing panicked travelers to hit the deck while queued to get aisle seats in the nonsmoking section. Four people in the check-in area were wounded, including an Argentine tourist.
