The President of Mekamui lives in the village of Guava (a local word for "big hole") near the Panguna mine. The road that leads up to the mine is littered with downed power pylons, ditches and a tight squeeze through a landslide-covered section. Francis and his aligned chiefs have created the Mekamui National ChiefOs Assembly and its armed forces as the Mekamui Defense Force. Despite what you hear from the peacekeepers, Francis views them as interlopers and invaders. They have graciously made big red lined "No fly" zones for their orange Hueys because Francis and his boys like to shoot at them. There are also a number of shooting incidents each week that never really make the news.
Francis claims that he received his presidential support from the 700 chiefs and other supporters who met in Panguna on July 28-31, 1998.
