As if it matters, there is a major crime problem with "rascals" or thugs in the main cities of PNG. There is also rape, robbery, carjacking, theft, mugging and the usual symptoms of primitive society forced to deal with Batman T-shirts and the Spice Girls. If you want more background call the Embassy Duty Officer at (675) 321-1455, Fax: (675) 32l-l593. If you get thumped or waylaid call (675) 693-8799 for help.
Our hardworking embassy in-country tells us not to patronize disreputable bars, proposition women, stay out after midnight or visit cemeteries, dead-end streets or the remote bush. If you would like this in the crystal-clear language of our government: "PNG is experiencing incomplete transition from subsistence agriculture" in a country that has "unifying elements that are counterbalanced by social strains." Thanks, guys.
