As if getting your throat slit wasn't bad enough, the threat of theft is increasing in Algeria. The most frequent crimes involve the theft of auto parts from parked cars. Car windows and trunk locks are frequently broken in the hope that the thief will find something of value within. Home burglary is an increasingly serious problem, and most residences of foreigners are protected by alarm systems, watchdogs and/or guards. Experienced expatriate residents should venture out into the city with only a minimum amount of cash carried in a carefully concealed location. Vehicles are not generally parked in unguarded locations because of theft and vandalism.
